Does Collagen Really Work for Skin? Here's What 11 Studies Say
Collagen supplements are a $7 billion industry. But does the science actually support the claims? We read the studies so you don't have to.
The Short Answer
Yes — with caveats. Oral collagen supplementation has strong clinical evidence for improving skin hydration, elasticity, and reducing wrinkles. But dose, type, and consistency all matter.
The Evidence
Study 1: The Meta-Analysis (2019)
A review of 11 randomized, placebo-controlled studies involving 805 participants found that oral collagen supplementation significantly improved:
- Skin hydration
- Skin elasticity
- Wrinkle reduction
compared to placebo groups. Published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, this is the strongest evidence we have — a meta-analysis across multiple independent studies.
Study 2: VERISOL Eye Wrinkle Trial (2014)
114 women aged 45-65 took 2.5g of VERISOL bioactive collagen peptides daily for 8 weeks. Results:
- 20% reduction in eye wrinkle volume compared to placebo
- Effects continued improving for 4 weeks after supplementation stopped
Published in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology. This is the study most collagen brands cite — and it used a relatively small dose of 2.5g.
Study 3: Skin Hydration (2018)
Women taking 10g of collagen peptides daily for 8 weeks saw a 28% improvement in skin hydration measured by scientific instruments — not self-reported surveys.
Published in Nutrients.
Study 4: Skin Elasticity in Women Over 35 (2019)
5g daily of collagen peptides for 12 weeks significantly improved skin elasticity and density compared to placebo in women aged 35-55.
Published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
What Makes Collagen Supplements Work
1. Hydrolyzed Peptides
Not all collagen is created equal. Hydrolyzed collagen peptides — collagen that's been broken into small, bioavailable fragments — are what the studies used. Your gut can absorb these peptides intact, and they've been shown to stimulate fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen in your skin) to increase production.
Whole collagen or gelatin provides beneficial amino acids, but hydrolyzed peptides have demonstrated superior bioavailability.
2. Adequate Dose
The studies showing results used 2.5g to 15g daily. The strongest results came from higher doses (10-15g). Most collagen gummies contain 2-5g — at the very bottom of the effective range.
3. Type I and III Collagen
Your skin is primarily made of Type I collagen (80%) and Type III collagen (15%). Bovine collagen provides both types. Marine collagen provides only Type I. Both work, but bovine gives you a more complete profile.
4. Vitamin C
This is the part most people miss. Vitamin C is a required cofactor for collagen synthesis. Without adequate vitamin C, your body cannot convert the amino acids from collagen supplements into new collagen fibers. Taking collagen without vitamin C is significantly less effective.
5. Consistency
Every study that showed results required daily supplementation for at least 4-8 weeks. There's no shortcut. The women who saw results were the ones who took their collagen every single day.
What Doesn't Work
- Topical collagen creams: Collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin barrier. Collagen in skincare products may moisturize, but they don't increase collagen production.
- Underdosed supplements: 1-2g of collagen is a label claim, not a therapeutic dose.
- Inconsistent use: Taking collagen 3 days a week won't produce the same results as daily use.
